Irpinia: Architectures of Silence
Filippo Cristallo
"'Irpinia: Architectures of Silence' is a profound photographic exploration of post-earthquake Irpinia, where the reconstruction has led to the creation of spaces that represent a clear departure from the historical and cultural identity of the region. This photographic sequence serves as a magnifying glass on the loss of authentic connections with the past and the cultural fabric of a place. At the heart of the project are the new architectures, which emerge not as signs of rebirth but rather as emblems of a reconstruction process that has overlooked the value of heritage and memory. The minimalist structures and defined geometries, instead of evoking progress, reflect a reality of alienation and disorientation. These images convey a sense of emptiness and absence, emphasizing the distance between the new constructions and the historical and cultural richness that once characterized these places. The project then extends to the natural landscapes of Irpinia, using these panoramas to showcase a vivid contrast with modern urbanization. The photographs illustrate the discrepancy between the tranquility of nature and the impersonality of the new constructions, highlighting a growing gap between the natural environment and urban spaces."(continue...)
